PRESS RELEASE: Start-up of the Halden Reactor Postponed
The Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) has postponed the planned start-up of the Halden Reactor during the week commencing 9 April. This is due to a fault that has been discovered in a valve.

IFE and the JEEP II-research-reactor is an important ally for the ESS (European Spallation Source)
Prof. Andreas Schreyer, The Director of Science at ESS visited the JEEP II-reactor at Kjeller, Norway on January the 23rd. Prof. Schreyer underlined the importance of the JEEP II-reactor. “The JEEP II-reactor produces neutrons, which we need” said Prof. Schreyer. “IFE and the JEEP II-rector are important. The Institute develops instruments which are vital to the ESS. IFE is a recognized partner and we look forward to a long lasting cooperation”.
The “world longest ongoing” research project continues for a new three-year period.
The continuation of the OECD-NEA Halden Reactor Project research program for 2018-2020 was signed in Paris on the 8 of December 2017.
Safety assessment report of the JEEP II research reactor
IFE has received the complete report from the Integrated Safety Assessment of Research Reactors (INSARR) in October 2017 from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Norwegian Government today published the national budget proposal for 2018. IFE is pleased that the Norwegian State is taking responsibility for the handling of nuclear waste and the challenges associated with future decommissioning of research reactor facilities in Norway.

World's nuclear experts meet at Halden Reactor Project (HRP)
Norway's biggest international research project gathered 250 delegates for the EHPG conference held in Lillehammer between 24 and 29 September. EHPG stands for Enlarged Halden Program Group, and this conference is organised every two years as part of the management of the Halden Reactor Project. Nuclear safety experts from all over the world gather at these conferences in order to share their experiences and develop new security safety solutions for nuclear power plants.
IAEA mission says research reactor operator in Norway is committed to safety
A team of eight reactor experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has for one week undergone the safety of the JEEP II research reactor at Kjeller. The expert group concludes that IFE strongly emphasizes safety and security work in its operations.

Between 3 and 10 October, a group of eight international reactor experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will review the operational safety of the JEEP II reactor at Kjeller. This will lead to a review of the safety culture at IFE in March 2018.
Untrue rumours about an on-going incident at the Halden Research Reactor in Norway
IFE has been made aware of stories about an on-going incident involving a “meltdown” at the Halden Reactor that currently are circulating in some European media and websites.

The new FME center is dedicated to development of materials, components and technology for use of batteries and hydrogen in zero emission transport systems. It will be a special focus on the maritime sector.
The Netherlands re-join the Halden Reactor Project
The Netherlands signed the Halden Agreement on December 1st and will formally become the 20th member country in the Halden Reactor Project (HRP) after the formal acceptance from the Halden Board during their Paris meeting on December 9th, and after the approval of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Press release: unintended release of radioactive iodine at the Halden Reactor
Monday 24. October at 1.45 PM an unintended release of radioactive iodine occurred in relation to the handling of test fuel in the reactor hall of the Halden Reactor. The release represents no threat for IFE’s employees or the environment.
Cost reduction measures at IFE
IFE has experienced a significant market downturn in several of its business areas in the energy sector in the second half of 2016. Experimentally-based R&D for the nuclear power industry continues to be financially challenging in the current market environment of low energy prices. In addition, several other sectors at IFE have been significantly affected by the substantial drop in oil prices with subsequent reduction in activities.
IFE supports American control room modernization program
The U.S. Department of Energy, together with Idaho National Labs (INL) and several nuclear utilities, has started a major program to support the modernization and long-term operation of the existing U.S. nuclear fleet. INL has contracted IFE to support studies at the INL control room simulator in order to develop and test control room concepts and tools, and to measure the benefits and potential drawbacks of these tools.
