Nano comes from the Greek nanos, meaning dwarf. Nanoscience is all about research on the smallest bits of nature, right down to the atomic and molecular level.

Nanotechnology is a field in the intersection between physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. This is among the fastest growing science fields in our time. Nanotechnology has, among other things, ambitions to create materials with specific, tailor-made properties.

IFE researches partly on carbon nanotubes, carbon nano-cones and nanostructuring of solar cells. Scandinavias first facility for production of nanotubes was opened at IFE in 2003, and has established a subsidiary company, n-Tec, producing nano-carbon materials for commercial purposes.

The IFE is working mostly with nanoscience, which is basic research to find out what happens at the nano level. There are great hopes that this science will play an important role in the future. Nano Science will produce new materials with new qualities.
