Sean Erik Foss

Sean Erik Foss is the head of department for the Solar Energy Department at IFE.


  • MSc in Technical Physics, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway
  • PhD in physics, UiO, Oslo, Norway, 2005: Optical filters in porous silicon

Fields of expertise:

  • High efficiency single crystal silicon back contacted and PERC solar cells: design and process development
  • Laser processing for solar cells and printed electronics
  • Solar cell modelling/simulation
  • Solar cell characterization methods: optical and electronic
  • Contacting of high efficiency silicon solar cells
  • Use of PV on buildings and in agriculture in Norway

Other experience:

  • Project management of and work package leader in several projects including innovation and research projects funded partly or fully by the Norwegian Research Council (NRC) as well as development projects funded by industry (domestic and foreign). Project manager for IFEs part of the EU FP7 project CHEETAH (2014-2018).
  • Planning, follow-up during building, and running a state-of-the-art solar cell laboratory
  • Risk assessment of laboratory infrastructure, equipment and procedures
  • Writing and co-writing numerous successful project applications
  • Organizing the Norwegian shadow group of the PV Technology Platform together with Sintef
  • Representative for IFE in the EERA Joint Programme for PV and leader of the Research Theme: Automated Processes
  • Strategy processes and organizational development at IFE
  • IFE’s representative on the board of OREEC – the Oslo Renewable Energy and Environment Cluster and on the board of Solenergiklyngen – a network for developing the PV market in the Oslo region
