CO2 corrosion
IFE has over several years had a close cooperation with international oil companies in their efforts to cope with pipeline corrosion. IFE has performed research on CO2 corrosion in oil and gas wells and pipelines for more than 30 years. During the last decade an increasing part of the activity has been focused on corrosion in pipelines with high H2S content in addition to CO2. IFE has specialized in evaluation and testing of the pH stabilization technique for corrosion control in gas pipelines. Better testing techniques for corrosion inhibitor selection and evaluation is also an important activity.

Prevent hydrate formation in gas pipelines
IFE has a large activity on chemical treatment and salt and scale precipitation in systems where glycol is used to prevent hydrate formation in gas pipelines. This activity is focused on improving the operation of glycol regeneration and reclamation systems in order to remove salts in a controlled and efficient way. IFE has an active cooperation with most vendors and operators of glycol regeneration systems.

Corrosion in pipelines for transport of CO2
IFE has also specialized in corrosion in pipelines for transport of CO2 from carbon capture facilities to CO2 storage locations. This acitivity is focused on studies of the effect of impurities in CO2 captured from fossile fired power plants, like SO2, NOx, water and other impurities, with the aim to determine the safe operation window for transport of dense phase CO2 with impurities in carbon steel pipelines.

Centre for research in the field of internal corrosion of oil and gas pipelines
A combination of fundamental research, broad joint industry projects and field-specific practical tasks has made IFE an internationally renowned centre for research in the field of internal corrosion of oil and gas pipelines. More than 80 % of the work is funded by oil companies and oil related industry, and the most important customers are: Statoil, Shell, Total, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Fjords Processing. The department has a large international activity with more than 40 % of the project work from companies outside Norway.

IFE has extensive custom made laboratory equipment and can offer a wide range of corrosion tests in both CO2 and H2S environments, including testing with very high H2S content. Multiphase experiments can be done in co-operation with the Department for Process and Fluid Flow Technology at IFE.
