- Abstract
- This paper is a high-level presentation of OECD Halden Reactor Projects (HRP) activities that relate to hybrid control room design, implementation and V&V. The paper start out with a review of experiences on a broad scale that takes into account many contributing factors involved in a control room upgrade projects, e.g. change management principles, work procedures and methods, communication and crew interaction as well as crew training. The reported review was implemented back in 2001, but it is deemed of current value to many planned and ongoing control room upgrade projects. The complexity of control room upgrade projects underlines the importance of keeping a tight control of the design and implementation of new systems and work processes. The application of Virtual Reality affords a common understanding of an evolving design and facilitates the study of human factors issues at a very early stage during the design process. The paper present one VR based system called CREATE that helps in this respect. In conclusion, the paper presents a selection of human factors issues and verification and validation methods that should be taken into account when doing control room design and upgrades.
