Energy and Environment

Energy and Environment
Sun, wind and hydrogen will provide the world with renewable energy in the future. The energy is already there, but is not being utilized well enough. IFE is working to change that.
CO2 Management
Within the field of climate technology and CO2 management IFE’s focus is on development of new technologies and industrial processes to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
Energy System Analysis
IFE are modelling energy systems including energy resources and production, conversion and transmission, demand for energy services, stationary sector and transportation, economic development and energy policy in regions of Norway, in Norway and the Nordic region.
Radiation Protection
Radiation protection involves management and technical measures that are necessary to protect humans from harmful effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation. It includes both radiation physics, dosimetry (detection of radiation and energy transfer) and radiation biology (biological effects of radiation in living organisms).
Radioecology
Radioecology is a scientific discipline which studies how radioactive substances interact with nature; how different mechanisms affect the substances’ migration and uptake in food chain and ecosystems. Investigations in radioecology might include aspects of field sampling, designed field and laboratory experiments and the development of predictive simulation models. This multi- and interdisciplinary science combines techniques from some of the more basic, traditional fields, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and ecology, with applied concepts in radiation protection. Radioecological studies form the basis for estimating doses and assessing the consequences of radioactive pollution for human health and the environment.
Renewable Energy Systems
Integrated renewable energy systems and hydrogen technology.
Solar Energy
The sunlight falling upon Earth contains vastly more energy than that which is used by the entire human race. This energy can be converted into electricity by the use of solar cells. It is widely believed that a significant part of the future production of electricity will be done by solar cells.
Thermal Heat Pumps
The focus is on development of energy efficient process solutions for the industry. We mainly work on absorption based heat pumps and methods or systems to reducing energy consumptions in the industry. This includes absorption technology, process integration analysis and energy studies.
Wind Energy
Norway has an excellent wind power potential. Typical sites at the coast have annual mean winds in the range of 8 to 10 m/s. This is considerable better than the typical wind conditions in Denmark or northern Germany. Wind farms located at the long Norwegian coastline are expected to operate very efficient.
