The conference was opened by Snikka Bohlin, President of the Nordic Council, and Sweden’s Environmental Minister Andreas Carlgren and gathered some 300 Nordic parliamentarians, political leaders, business executives and environmental organisations.
President Kjell Bendiksen pointed out the big challenges the energy sector currently is facing.
He emphasized that increased energy efficiency is our only option to reduce CO2 emissions with force in short term, and that the Nordic countries should establish common requirements and standards in the area.
According to Bendiksen the Nordic countries need to coordinate their efforts in solar, wind, bio energy and CO2 management, to ensure diversity, each country having a special responsibility for one technology. The ambition must be to develop competitive technologies that can be mass produced and form a basis for Nordic billion dollar industries that can become globally leading suppliers of "green" technologies.
