The aim of the theoretical activity is to explore properties of solar cell materials using accurate density functional calculations. More specifically the following topics are planned to study:

  • Electronic structure, chemical bonding, structural properties, optical properties, and transport properties of solar cell materials
  • Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs)
  • Defects and impurities in TCOs and solar cell materials
    • Hydrogen and other shallow and deep level defects
    • Hydrogen related complexes
    • Vacancies
    • Dislocation engineering
  • Nanostructures:
    • Quantum dots
    • Quantum wires
    • Quantum wells
    • Voids
  • Band offset between different solar cell materials and doping limit
  • Hydrides
    • Novel application of hydrides in semiconductor electronics
    • Defects in hydrides

The following software have been used in the theoretical activity:

  • Materials Studio
  • Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP-PAW)
  • Tight Binding Linear Muffin-tin Orbital Method (TB-LMTO)
  • Full Potential Linear Muffin-tin Orbital  Method (FP-LMTO).
