System Requirements

The HVRC CREATE Tools are based on cross-platform Java technology.

If you are using Microsoft Windows or Linux x86 then the CREATE Tools installer will offer to install an appropriate Java environment for you.

If you are not using Microsoft Windows or Linux, ensure that Java and Java 3D are installed before installing the CREATE Tools. The latest versions of Java and Java 3D can be located on Sun Microsystems' Java Web site at <http://java.sun.com/>. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (and later) has Java 3D 1.3.1 preinstalled but it is necessary to upgrade to at least Java 3D 1.5.1 (we strongly recommend upgrading to Java 3D 1.5.3 using the installer supplied).

The minimum requirements for running the HVRC CREATE Tools are:

  • 1 GHz Pentium 4 or 1GHz G4 PowerPC Personal Computer
  • 512Mb RAM
  • Microsoft Windows XP/2003/Vista/7, Apple Mac OS X 10.4/10.5/10.6, or Linux x86
  • Java 5 Standard Edition 1.5.0_09
  • Java 3D 1.5.1
  • Graphics card with at least 32MB memory and either OpenGL 1.5 or DirectX 9 driver support (we recommend installing the demo version of HVRC CREATE if you are unsure)
  • For Microsoft Windows: 75MB free disk space for the complete tool suite (including the bundled Java environment). For Mac OS X: 24MB.
  • A three-button mouse (or a two-button mouse with scroll-wheel "button")

Use the alt-key on your keyboard in combination with the left mouse button to simulate the middle mouse button if you do not have three mouse buttons.

Neither the CREATE Tools nor the CREATE Server are recommended for, or tested under, Microsoft Windows 98 or ME.

The Server

The CREATE Server is based on web technology. Machines used as servers should not have dynamic IP addresses. The server computer does not require Java or a 3D graphics accelerator. Windows 2003/XP, Linux and Mac OS X computers are currently supported as servers. Installing CREATE servers on laptops is not generally recommended but is possible, with some usage restrictions.

Approximately 250MB free disk space is required for the server if Microsoft Windows is used (plus space for your own project files that you will create and work on with the software -- at least another 100 MB of free space is recommended). On Linux and Mac OS X computers, where Apache and Perl are pre-installed, about 100MB less space is required.
