Materials and Corrosion Technology

Internal corrosion in oil and gas pipelines with CO2 and H2S is the main focal point for the Corrosion Technology Department.

Titanautoklav

IFE has over several years had a close cooperation with international oil companies in their efforts to cope with pipeline corrosion. Another speciality is chemical treatment and salt and scale precipitation in systems where glycol is used to prevent hydrate formation in gas pipelines. Developing better testing techniques for corrosion inhibitor selection and evaluation has become one of the most important activities in the department.

A combination of fundamental research, broad joint industry projects and field-specific practical tasks has made IFE an internationally renowned centre for research in the field of internal corrosion of oil and gas pipelines. More than 80 % of the work is funded by oil companies and oil related industry, and the most important customers are: Total, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Saudi Aramco, Chevron, Petrobras, Shell, ExxonMobil, BG, Woodside, StatoilHydro and Aker Solutions.

Piece of pipeIFE has extensive custom made laboratory equipment and can offer a wide range of corrosion tests. Multiphase experiments can be done in co-operation with the Department for Process and Fluid Flow Technology at IFE.
