Experiment Engineering

ife The department organizes and executes the experimental program in the Halden Boiling Water Reactor which comprises studies of fuel and material characteristics during different operating, irradiation and water quality conditions.

The department uses a wide range of experimental systems and has well equipped laboratories with advanced analysis instruments. The results of the experiments provide a basis and expertise for solving major safety issues for the authority and the industry.
A major aim of the development work is to document the standards of materials and operating conditions that are needed to ensure integrity and functionality in critical safety components.

To generate trustable results, test rigs loaded into the Reactor are equipped with sensors of high accuracy. A broad electronic competence within the department makes it possible to secure a reliable data collection from the sensors and also to produce electronic systems for sale to related activities abroad.

The water quality is an important parameter during the experiments and the department has installed advanced instrumentation to monitor the purity and to trace elements.
A particular test has shown, for example, that the addition of a small amount of hydrogen in the cooling water reduces stress corrosion cracking.
