Environmental Technology
Environmental Technology operates the only radioactive waste treatment plant in Norway. All low and intermediate level radioactive waste received from IFE's own installations and from industry, defence, health institutions and research establishments are handled and stored. The department is in addition the operator of the national, combined storage and disposal facility for radioactive waste in Himdalen. Emission of greenhouse gases is considered to be one of the largest pollution problems that we have today. IFE is working with several possible solutions for industrial use of CO2 and subsurface storage. IFE is also engaged in development of new technology for CO2 capture in both pre- and post combustion techniques. Experimental facilities for acid gas reactions (CO2+H2S) applied to storage and for H2 production with integrated CO2 capture have been developed. Utilizing different tracers the department is engaged in a broad spectrum of areas like prospecting for and production of oil and gas, environmental effects imposed by chemicals used offshore, hydrology and groundwater pollution, and tracing of sources in order to map and decrease the diffusion of different pollutants. The department offers a broad spectrum of analytical and consultancy services within geochemistry and chemistry. Specialities are analyses of stable and radiogenic isotopes with solid source- and gas- mass spectrometry. A range of samples can be analysed; geological or biological material, water, oil and gas. |
