Strategic Institute Program - New Advanced Materials for Hydrogen Storage: The prospects of a future non polluting "Hydrogen Society" is currently the focus of considerable R&D. IFE has long traditions in studies of hydrogen in solid materials.
High temperature compression/absorption heat pump: IFE is developing a high temperature compression/absorption type heat pump. It is designed to upgrade industrial waste heat from a temperature of around 50°C to a temperature of 95-100°C. Cooling water of 5-10°C can also be produced simultaneously. Standard components are utilised and the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the heat pump process can reach more than 3.4. The relatively low investment cost combined with an efficient cycle makes the technology very promising for Norwegian industrial processes.
Deep sea offshore wind turbine technology: The exploitation of open sea (deep-water) wind energy resources can give access to a large number of sites with good wind conditions and less restrictions (noise, visual acceptance) than on-shore. Wind turbines used here may differ from conventional designs due to different operational conditions and absence of some restrictions.
