Course content
The laboratory course will consist of lectures and an experimental part. The lectures will encompass an introduction to neutron sources, scattering theory and instrumentation. Furthermore, selected topics of condensed matter will be presented, in particular hydrogen storage materials, magnetic materials and soft matter. The participating students will be divided into groups during the experimental part. The experimental data measured will be analysed by the students assisted by the scientist responsible for the instrument. All together there are approx. 12 hours of laboratory exercises and 23 hours of lectures.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to give students a realistic insight into the experimental technique of neutron scattering and its scientific power. The students should be able to compare various neutron techniques for solving particular structural problems and how these are complementary to other scattering techniques using electron and X-ray beams. The course is suitable for Master- and Ph.D.-students as well as researchers.
